When the world sings Gods song
I've made a playlist of worship songs and another one of hymns. But the music I was listening to yesterday was just entitled ' favourites' and encompassed songs from my childhood right through my teens and twenties to more recent years. Those songs which have stuck , the ones to which I know all the words and can sing all the harmonies and which bring back great memories. As I listened and sang along I realised that so much of the ' secular' music I love has a massive God content. Artists who, as far as I know, profess no relationship with Jesus, nevertheless sing about Him, or sing about His values and His creation . Here is one of the tracks I was listening to yesterday. Its the theme tune from the 1980's film Working Girl. When I first heard it my spirit stood to attention at once and I felt the same thing that I feel when I approach God in worship - that mixture of joy and excitement and connection. I've researched a tiny bit into what Carly Simon was thinking when she wrote it and she says she wanted to write a hymn ' It's the only hymn I've ever written'. This version is sung more slowly than the film soundtrack and has an added weight. As I was singing it yesterday I could feel the worship rising and the smile breaking out on my middle

Let the river run
Let all the dreamers
Wake the nation
Come, the New Jerusalem
We're coming to the edge
Running on the water
Coming through the fog
Your sons and daughters
I just love the thought of not just walking on water but running of it as we come out of the fog of our earthly lives and into eternity.
The next song was Fire and Rain , written by James Taylor after the death of his girlfriend in a plane crash in 1970
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Next was Cyndi Lauper, Time after time.
If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
And so my playlist went on and on. So many songs speaking God things to me. And I marvelled that so many artists, who aren't ' Christian Songwriters' write music through which God can communicate. I shouldn't be surprised. God is the giver of all good and perfect gifts, and to me, music is one of the best gifts ever. We are made in the image of a speaking, singing, creative God so we should expect to find Him in the speaking, singing, creative arts.I love the fact that the world is singing God's songs without even realising it.
I'm going to enjoy adding as many of them as possible to my playlist.
